Newport, Rhode Island Game 1: Albany Women 0 - Providence 5___________________________________ Women were in the D1 bracket at Newport which meant three matches over the course of the day. Cool, misty weather welcomed the team to Fort Adams State Park. The women had just come off a solid win at Burlington in preparation for the tournament- and traveled with a solid roster of vets and rookies totaling 20. First match of the day was against Providence at 8:45am. It was the first true D1 club of the season the women had faced and they were eager to see how they fared against their counterparts. The team played aggressively and dominated possession for much of the match. Albany ventured into the try-zone 3 times but it was either held up or wasn't seen by the ref. Providence got the win on a run by their speedy fullback in the second half. Match duration: 20 minutes per half 1st half actual time played: 20 minutes ; 2nd half actual time played: 22 minutes Total time played: 42 minutes. Albany Roster: (1) Megan Knickerbocker, (2) Nicole Vidro, (3) Shannon Wallace, (4) Erin Putnam, (5) Tiffany Merritt, (6) Christina Chiappetta, (7) Lorin Willett, (8) Angie Craig, (9) Kristin Bonomo, (10) Abby Brigham, (11) Caitlin Casey, (12) Kate Lowre, (13) Catie Prehn, (14) Liz Isabelle, (15) Beth Fairall, (16) Ashley D'Antonio, (17) Tracy Watson, (18) Jen Dailey, (19) Ally Seney, (20) Jessie Muhic. Injured players who traveled but did not play: Chelsea Belmonte, Rene Kementowski Second Half Providence: Try: (15) - 8m Game 2: Albany Women 10 - Boston 34_____________________________________ Second match of the day was at 11:15am vs. Boston. Team had come of a well-rounded performance against Providence. Boston's back line proved too much for the club to handle today. Albany was playing from behind almost as soon as the match started. The club never gave up and followed the lead of several fired-up players through out the game and left the pitch with the heads held high. Match duration: 20 minutes per half 1st half actual time played: 20 minutes 2nd half actual time played: 23 minutes Total time played: 43 minutes. Albany Roster: (1) Megan Knickerbocker,(2) Nicole Vidro,(3) Shannon Wallace,(4) Erin Putnam,(5) Tiffany Merritt,(6) Christina Chiappetta,(7) Tracy Watson,(8) Angie Craig, (9) Kristin Bonomo, (10) Abby Brigham, (11) Caitlin Casey, (12) Kate Lowre, (13) Liz Isabelle, (14) Catie Prehn, (15) Beth Fairall, (16) Ashley D'Antonio, (17) Lorin Willett, (18) Jen Dailey, (19) Ally Seney, (20) Jessie Muhic. Beantown is typically Albany's most challenging opponent but with several Beantown alum on Albany's side, the match is usually an occasion that brings out some of the strongest play from the club. Today's match would be no exception. Beantown scored within the first five minutes of the match but after that the women doubled-down and played aggressively in every phase of play and forced many errors on Beantown's part. Even the penalties handed out to Albany were for go-forward, aggressive play. The subs did a fantastic job of keeping the intensity level high and the team shut-out Beantown in the second half while stringing together multiple offensive phases that stretched Beantown's defense. The women definitely played with heart and determination that inspired all on the sidelines. Match duration: 20 minutes per half; 1st half actual time played: 20 minutes ; 2nd half actual time played: 20 minutes ; Total time played: 40 minutes. Albany Roster: (1) Megan Knickerbocker, (2) Nicole Vidro, (3) Shannon Wallace, (4) Erin Putnam, (5) Tiffany Merritt, (6) Jessie Muhic, (7) Tracy Watson, (8) Angie Craig, (9) Kristin Bonomo, (10) Abby Brigham, (11) Caitlin Casey, (12) Kate Lowerre, (13) Liz Isabelle, (14) Catie Prehn, (15) Beth Fairall, (16) Ashley D'Antonio, (17) Lorin Willett, (18) Jen Dailey, (19) Ally Seney, (20) Christina Chiappetta. Albany, NY Albany 7 - Charles River 39 Beautiful, sunny day at DGF. Albany had a full roster with a lot of new talent mixed in amongst the vets. The club continued on its mission of getting everyone on the roster plenty of time to develop their rugby skills in match situations. We also got a couple of Siena seniors time on the field- we thank them for coming down and joining the club for the day. After the match we had a lot of fun hosting Charles River... a club similar in spirit to the Sirens. Both clubs were decked out in their best red, white and blue patriotic outfits to honor the victims of the marathon bombings.
